• TYPE 302 STAINLESS STEEL WIRE
Type 302 stainless steel wire is a general purpose stainless alloy typically composed of 18% Chromium and 8% nickel. The balance of the chemistry is: carbon 15% maximum, manganese 2.00% maximum: and silicon 1.00% maximum. It is the most widely used stainless spring wire because of its high corrosion resistance properties and good tensile strength. For spring applications it is generally furnished in the cold drawn condition. Type 302 springs have good strength at moderate temperatures. If properly treated after forming they will set less than most other spring materials at temperatures up to 500*F. Type 302 material in the spring condition is slightly magnetic due to the transformation of some martinsite in the drawing operation. The greater the amount of cold reduction the higher the degree of magnetism. Gibbs soap coated Type 302 stainless steel wire is available in the size range .014" to .625". All wire conforms to ASTM-A-313 and AMS-5688.

 • TYPE 302 STAINLESS STEEL WIRE - NICKEL COATED
Type 302 stainless steel wire is a general purpose Stainless alloy typically composed of 18% Chromium and 8% nickel. The balance of the chemistry is: carbon 15% maximum, manganese 2.00% maximum: and silicon 1.00% maximum. It is the most widely used stainless spring wire because of its high corrosion resistance properties and good tensile strength. For spring applications it is generally furnished in the cold drawn condition. Nickel coated stainless steel wire was developed to have excellent lubrication to minimize friction during the coiling process. The consistent and uniform lubrication helps provide stable spring dimensions and less load variation during coiling. Nickel coated stainless wire eliminates the need for pickling and degreasing prior to heat treatment with no major color change expected after heat treatment, retaining its same bright and consistent finish.Gibbs Type 302 nickel coated stainless steel wire is available in the size range .006" to .079". All wire conforms to ASTM-A-313. Heavier sizes are available on application.

 • TYPE 316 STAINLESS STEEL WIRE
Similar in composition to Type 302, Type 316 stainless steel wire has a slightly higher nickel content and 2-2.50% molybdenum giving this alloy better corrosion resistance. Type 316's tensile strength is 10-15% lower than that of Type 302, and the alloy is slightly less magnetic in the spring temper than Type 302. With its superior cold working properties, it can be used for severe cold forming operations and exhibits short time tensile and creep strength properties at elevated temperatures.Gibbs Type 316 stainless steel wire is coated for coiling and is available in the range 0.015 - .625" conforming to ASTM A313. Nickel coated available on application in size range .007" to .130"

 • TYPE 17 CHROME - 7 NICKEL WIRE
Type 17 chrome - 7 nickel stainless steel wire (AISI 631) has the corrosion resistance of Type 302 plus superior strength and heat resistance. This grade of stainless wire possesses high elastic qualities similar to music wire while maintaining the corrosion resistant qualities of the standard Type 302 stainless. The alloy is an excellent material for all kinds of springs where long life is required under severe service conditions, providing excellent fatigue properties, ductility, high yield strength, Modulus of elasticity, and strength-to-weight ratio.

17 chrome - 7 nickel offers the advantage of being easily formed in Condition C and then hardened to high strength levels by simple heat treatment. 17-7 is hardenable due to the addition of aluminum to the chemistry of the alloy.

Gibbs 17 chrome - 7 nickel stainless wire is furnished in the cold drawn Condition C and should be treated at 900*F. for one hour after forming into springs to achieve the maximum tensile properties of Condition CH900 (cold drawn and age hardened). Sizes are available within the range .017" - .625" conforming ASTM A313, AND AMS-5678.
